Here's a look at our 2010 Winners:

Grand Prize Winner: Lori Zook

Lori is from Lancaster, Pennsylvania and she created the winning entry that she calls "Pennymint Patties". They have a wonderful story behind them and here is Lori in her own words:
"My daughter, Jazlyn, is anaphylactic to egg, dairy, peanuts and tree nuts. I have always tried to come up with recipes for the foods she saw and wanted to eat. One day Jazlyn asked my mom what her favorite candy was and she said York Peppermint Patties. Jazlyn adores my mom and wanted to try the candy. Since the store bought version was unsafe, I came up with this amazingly easy recipe that tastes just like the original. I've called them Pennymint Patties because my mom's name is Penny. Since I have developed this recipe, my mom no longer eats the original candy, she just asks me to make another batch of these for her"

The contest was decided by a panel of "Allergy Moms" and Lori's entry hit high marks! Here is a quote directly from one of the judges who actually made the patties for the group to test: "Oh my god, they are fantastic, made all of us want to cry. Real Peppermint Patties have dairy and egg so they are out for all of us. Aimy actually asked to take the leftovers for her husband as they are his favorite candy. And the mom had a great story. If you want to pick something that will thrill those with food allergies this would be the best choice. I have never seen anything like it and that mom deserves a gold star."

Second Place : Kimberly Hammond

Kimberly hails from Kingwood, Texas and entered one of her favorites - Lemonade Cookies. According to Kimberly, "My children have food allergies, and the bane of my existence is all the class parties that think "icing a sugar cookie" counts as a craft! I used to scramble to make these cookies the night before a class party, send the boys to school with one each and then get fat snacking on the other dozen left behind in my kitchen! (Those class parties were killing my waistline!)
Then I figured out that I can roll the dough into a cylindrical shape, wrap it and refrigerate it (or even freeze it) for later use. To my surprise, the cookies were even better this way.
Now I have a roll of cookie dough in my fridge, that I can slice and bake for the Valentines party, the Easter party, the Halloween party, the Christmas party..."

Third Place: Suzanne Banfield

Suzanne lives in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. She shared her recipe for Apple-Butter Nut Muffins. Suzanne says "When I was first diagnosed with celiac disease, I had a moment of feeling sorry for myself about all the foods I couldn't have. But I immediately turned it into a challenge of making healthier and more delicious recipes with the foods I could enjoy - like this muffin!"
